UK govt denies that jailed former president Charles Taylor is dead

The United Kingdom's Ministry of Justice has denied reports that former Liberian President, Charles Taylor died today. The Justice ministry made the clarification to BBC after rumours of his death spread on social media. Taylor is serving a 50 year jail term in the UK over allegations of backing rebels in Sierra Leone during the 1991-2002 civil war.

Tenant, 35, arraigned for allegedly raping landlady’s great-grand daughter

A 35-year-old man, Yusuf Umaru, on Thursday appeared before an Ikorodu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos state , for allegedly raping the great-grand daughter of his landlady. The accused, who resides at 14, Eketunde Street, in Anibaba Area of Ikorodu, a suburb of Lagos, is facing a charge of unlawful carnal knowledge of a 15-year-old girl. Umaru has, however, denied the charge. The Prosecutor, Mr Iyabode Johnson, had told the court that the accused committed the offence on September 15, in an empty room at the above-mentioned address. Johnson said, “The victim usually visits her great-grandmother at every Eid-el-kabir (Ileya festival). “At every  Ileya  festival that the girl came visiting, the accused usually raped her and would threaten her not to report the case to anyone if she did not want to die. “But during this year’s festival held in September, the girl could not bear it anymore and summoned the courage to report the matter to her great-grandmother

Police arraign six over Indian hemp possession, smoking

The Police on Thursday brought six men before an Ota Chief Magistrates’ Court, Ogun State, over alleged possession and smoking of Indian hemp. The accused are Omoyosi Kamoro, 45; Samuel Okorafor, 38; Azeez Shola, 50; Babalola Akeem, 28; Bright Anthony, 36; and Ado Musa, 40. The prosecutor, Sgt. Ebibomino Itaita, told the court that the accused and others still at large committed the offences on October 14, at about 11pm., at Ojuelegba Street, Sango-Ota, Ogun. Itaita said the accused, of no fixed addresses, were found smoking weed suspected to be Indian hemp in the public. He said that the offences contravened Sections 249(d) and 250(4) of the Criminal Code, Vol. 1, Law of Ogun State, 2006. The accused, however, all pleaded not guilty. The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Funke Odubanjo, granted the accused persons N500,000 bail, with two sureties in like sum, who must reside within the court’s jurisdiction. Odubanjo said that one of the sureties must be a close relation

Supreme court suspends Code of Conduct Tribunal hearing on Saraki's case

The Supreme Court has suspended proceedings in the trial of Senate President Bukola Saraki at the Code of Conduct Tribunal pending the conclusion of the appeal filed by Saraki at the Apex court. The prosecutor told the supreme court that Saraki will sign an undertaken refraining him from doing anything at the tribunal pending the determination of the suit. The prosecutor said this while urging the court to grant a stay of proceedings. The prosecutor also asked for accelerated hearing as not doing so will give room for a caused person to continue to delay his trial.

I don't want to go to jail so I wouldn't steal - Rotimi Amaechi says

New Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi says he does not want to go to jail and so will not be stealing from the accounts of the ministry. Amaechi said this while speaking to members of the ministry after his swearing-in as Minister yesterday November 11th. “I am not as bad as people from the outside say I am. I only engage based on principles. I neither take nor give bribes. If you want to relate with me, don’t give me money. I will also not give you money. I don’t want to go to jail so I won’t steal. But I won’t spare thieves,” he said

25 people killed in a Boko Haram raid in Niger

At least 25 people were on Wednesday, November 12, killed in a Boko Haram attack in a village in southern Niger. According to Niger military officials, 20 of the dead are Boko Haram militants who were killed in subsequent clashes with the army. The terrorist group killed five civilians in their initial attack on the village located in the West African nation's Bosso district. Niger soldiers drove back the militants, killing around 20 of them, the officers said. "Reacting quickly, the government's forces were able to push them back. Most of the Boko Haram elements have been neutralized," said one of the officers, based in the Diffa border region. The situation is under control and we are carrying out clean-up operations," he told Reuters

Former C'River Deputy Gov Dies In His Sleep

Former deputy governor of Cross River, Dr Walter Eneji is dead! This information was confirmed by Christian Ita, the chief press secretary to Governor Ben Ayade of Cross River. According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the deceased who served under former governor, Donald Duke from February 2003 to May 2007, was reported to have died in his sleep while recuperating from a prolonged sickness. The late Walter Eneji served as a deputy to former Governor Donald Duke He contested the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship primaries ahead of the 2007 election, but was ousted by the immediate past governor of Cross River Senator Liyel Imoke.

Commonwealth appoints GEJ to mediate in Zanzibar election stalemate

F ollowing his highly acclaimed leadership of the Commonwealth Observer Group in last month’s Tanzania general elections, the 53-nation body of former British colonies has given former President Goodluck Jonathan a fresh mandate to lead the charge for the resolution of the political stalemate in the semi-independent island of Zanzibar.   After the October 25 general elections which produced John Magufuli as the new President of Tanzania, the Jonathan-led COG and other international observers had endorsed the polling processes as credible. However, tension rules on the island of Zanzibar, following the nullification of the presidential election results by the local electoral body, over claims of irregularities. International observers have continued to dispute this decision, on the grounds that both the voting and counting processes were held in an atmosphere of peace. The Commonwealth which has a history of mediating on the island has kick-started the international efforts

Woman who kept mother's corpse for a year in order to claim benefits jailed for six months

More than a year after her mother, Hope Ruller died, Mary Kersting kept the decomposing body of the 93-year-old woman in her flat in Gloversville, Upstate New York and stole more than $13,000 (£8,600) in social security checks belonging to Hope Ruller.   Kersting, who lied to her niece about her mother still being alive, claimed she couldn’t afford to have her mother buried.      "She also explained that one day led to the next and although she thought about calling authorities. She just didn’t do it." Fulton County Public Defender Gerald McAuliffe said. Although Hope has been buried next to her husband, Kerting's niece, who didn’t want to be identified, said her grandmother ‘left this earth with no dignity’.   Apart from the six months sentence, Kersting was also ordered to carry out 500 hours of community service.

Buhari congratulates Golden Eaglets

President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday congratulated the Golden Eaglets of Nigeria on their victory over Mali in the final match of this year’s Under-17 FIFA World Cup tournament in Chile. In a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, the President applauded what he called “the exemplary zeal, determination, commitment, hard work, patriotism and soccer artistry” which the Golden Eaglets displayed throughout the tournament to win the championship for a record fifth time. Synagogue: Court rejects engineers’ application to stop prosecution

A Federal High Court in Lagos on Monday dismissed the fundamental rights enforcement suits filed by the engineers who built the collapsed Synagogue Church of All Nations’ six-storey building that killed 116 persons on September 12, 2014. The engineers, Mr. Oladele Ogundeji and Mr. Akinbela Fatiregun, had gone before Justice Ibrahim Buba seeking an order restraining the police from inviting, arresting or prosecuting them over the victims’ death. They had filed the suits following the verdict of the coroner’s inquest, which attributed the building collapse to structural defect and recommended the engineers for investigation and prosecution for criminal negligence. But Buba, in his ruling on the defendants’ preliminary objection on Monday, said the engineers “had not made out a case of infringement on their fundamental rights even on the merit of the application,” and dismissed their applications. Nutritionists have called for optimal nutrition in the first 1,000 days of life if the nation must curb the incidence of malnutrition among the children. Speaking at the 39th Conference and Annual General Meeting of the Nigerian Institute of Food Science and Technology in Owerri, Imo State, which was held in collaboration with Coca-Cola Nigeria, experts said there was the need for optimal nutrition, starting from the time of pregnancy up until a baby is two years old.
