We’ll probe Okonjo-Iweala, Diezani soon, says EFCC

Ngozi Okonjo Iweala 56873 The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission will soon begin the probe of the nation’s oil and gas industry as part of the current anti-corruption war of the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration. Osun assembly passes land use charge bill

Osun State Governor, Aregbesola The Osun State House of Assembly on Monday passed the State Land Use Charge Bill 2016. The bill, which was sponsored by the executive, “seeks to make provision for the consolidation of all Property and Land Based Rates Law.” According to a statement in Osogbo on Monday by the Chairman, House Committee on Information, Mr. Olatubosun Oyintiloye, the bill was passed following a motion moved by the Leader of the House, Mr. Timothy Owoeye, for the third reading. He added that the bill was seconded by member representing Ede South constituency, Nureni Adebisi, at the plenary. Pronouncing the passage of the bill, the Speaker, Mr. Najeem Salaam, according to Oyintiloye, said its passage was delayed to ensure that affordable rate that would not put unnecessary burden on the people was arrived at. Fire guts shops, cars at Idimu Lagos

An early morning fire in the Idimu, Ikotun area of Lagos State, has consumed a mechanic workshop and no fewer than 10 shops and three vehicles. Our correspondent learnt that the fire started around 4am on Monday and was caused by an electrical surge. Firefighters from the Lagos State Fire Service, Ikotun station, were said to have responded with 10,000 litres of water. An official of the state fire service said inflammable materials in the mechanic worskop compounded the inferno. He said, “We got an alert from a resident exactly 4.18am and we deployed our men from the Ikotun fire station. They met the fire raging and battled it. There were 10 shops, built with corrugated iron sheets surrounding the mechanic workshop. They were all razed. Two cars and a bus were also burnt.” He added that there was no injury or loss of life. The Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, has expressed sadness over the death of the wife of Brig.-Gen. Mobolaji Johnson (retd.), the first Military Governor of Lagos State. Funmi Johnson died on Saturday at the age of 76 after a brief illness. The governor, in a condolence message signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Habib Aruna, described late Funmi as an epitome of humility and uprightness. Ambode said when her husband was the military governor, Funmi did not let her husband’s position get into her head, choosing instead to maintain a simple way of life. He said, “She was a virtuous woman. As wife of the military governor, she still went about her normal duties. She was seen in the markets; she related with her colleagues at the Yaba College of Technology and the Federal Training Centre, as well as her personal friends just as she used to before her husband became the governor.
