Oronsaye committee: FG to merge ministries in 2016

The Federal Government has concluded plans to implement the report of the Stephen Oronsaye’s committee on civil service reforms in 2016. The panel recommended the merger of some ministries and agencies in the federal civil service. The government which said the implementation of the report would be preceded by employees headcount and management audit, had set up four committees to ensure the merger of the ministries and agencies. They include the Legislation Committee to interface with the lawmakers on enacting enabling and supporting laws; Commercial Committee to implement agencies that will be commercialised, Staff and Management Audit Committee and the Merger Committee. The Director-General of the Bureau of Public Service Reforms, a parastatal of the Presidency, Dr Joe Abah, stated this in an interview with journalists on Wednesday in Abuja. Bauchi 1st Lady donates N8m gifts to Christian women, widows

The First Lady of Bauchi State, Hajia Hadiza Abubakar has donated food items and textile material worth N8 million to Christian women and Widows in the state. Flagging off the distribution of the items at ECWA Church Sabon Kaura in Bauchi yesterday, Hajia Abubakar said the gesture was part of the present administration efforts at showing love to women and to enable them enjoy the Christmas celebration. Items distributed include 200 bags of race, 120bags of Sugar, 160 bags of Maize, 1,100 wrappers/textile materials, 150 vegetable oil among others. Nnamani may emerge PDP BoT chair

FORMER Senate President, Chief Ken Nnamani, may emerge the Chairman, Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the board holds an emergency meeting today. The parley, slated to hold at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja, is coming four days after the judgment of an Abuja High Court sacking the Acting National Chairman, Uche Secondus. With the ruling, PDP now exists without a chairmen of the National Working Committee (NWC) and BoT. The former BoT chairman, Tony Anenih, resigned weeks after the defeat of PDP in this year’s presidential election. Reps probe Obasanjo govt’s $5m Lake Chad grant

The House of Representatives on Thursday began an investigation into how a $5m grant the Federal Government gave to the Lake Chad Basin Commission during the tenure of former President Olusegun Obasanjo was spent. The House said the money was given to the commission to carry out “feasibility studies on how to direct rivers to the lake,” but observed that nothing much was heard of the $5m after it was released. A member of the House, Mr. Ahmed Abu, who raised the issue on the floor, did not specify the period in Obasanjo’s eight-year tenure that the money was paid. However, Abu informed the House that a report of an audit conducted on Lake Chad   by the Office of the Auditor-General of the Federation and released in October this year, did not reflect how the fund was utilised. Abu recalled that since the commission was established in 1964 with the “responsibility of planning and regulating the uses of the water and other natural resources of the conventional basin”,

Biafra: 5 shot dead celebrating Kanu’s release

FIVE members of Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) were yesterday allegedly shot dead by securitymen in Onitsha, Anambra State while celebrating the release by an Abuja High Court of Radio Biafra Director, their leader, Mr. Nnamdi Kanu. The IPOB members who were jubilating at the Bridge Head in Onitsha clashed with the security operatives resulting in the death of five persons. There was tension among motorists and commuters along the busy Niger Bridge area, Enugu/Onitsha Expressway over fear of possible blockage of the Bridge Head by the IPOB members. The supporters, who on hearing about the court’s favourable verdict on Kanu converged at the statue of the late Biafran leader, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu- Ojukwu in a large procession from Bridge Head to the town when they were intercepted by the security operatives. The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has said he owes nobody any apology for kneeling down to worship God during the thanksgiving service held in his honour at the Paul’s Anglican Church, Ife, after his coronation. The Ooni said this in statement in Osogbo on Thursday by the Director of Communications and Public Affairs, Ooni’s Palace, Ife, Mr. Moses Olafare. The monarch spoke in reaction to criticisms against him by an online medium that he knelt down to worship God during the church service. Ogunwusi said it was wrong to equate any king, no matter his status, with the Almighty God who created the heavens and the earth, saying the comment was an attempt to embarrass the throne. Nollywood actor, Yomi Fabiyi today narrowly escaped death on Lagos -Ibadan expressway, the actor who was coming from Ondo state when the accident happened, said he could not believe how lucky he is, to still be alive.
