I didn’t pay tribute to Tinubu –Soyinka Wole Soyinka Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, has distanced himself from a tribute he purportedly wrote in honour of the national leader of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu. In a tribute which has gone viral on the social media, Soyinka was quoted as saying that he admired Tinubu because he saved Nigeria from becoming a one-party state. Soyinka was also alleged to have said that he would continue to stand by Tinubu no matter what. The alleged tribute read in part, “I do not admire Tinubu because he is a saint. I do not admire Tinubu because he is from the South. I do not admire Tinubu because he is a Yoruba. If I want saints, I will proceed to heaven, not on earth. Every human is fallible. I admire Tinubu because he saved Nigeria from the danger of falling into a one-party state. “He has nurtured many renowned national successors. He listened to the voice of the masses to surrender his pers

100 northern women die daily during childbirth – UNFPA

Nigeria Country Director of United Nations Population Fund, Ms. Ratidzai Ndhlovu, says no fewer than 100 women die daily across northern Nigeria during childbirth. She spoke on Thursday in Sokoto at a consultative meeting with the theme, ‘Accelerating the Reduction of Maternal Deaths in Northern Nigeria: The Role of the Traditional and Religious Leaders’. Ndhlovu decried the high maternal mortality figure, stressing that collective efforts must be stepped up to redress the ugly trend. She added, “No pregnant woman should be allowed to die while bringing a life into the world and they should be adequately protected. “Traditional rulers, community and religious leaders should take census of all pregnant women in their areas with a view to tracking the exact figure of maternal mortality. “This would ginger all of us to step up measures to reduce the menace and save more pregnant mothers and their children from dying during childbirth. “This would certainly help in reducing

Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi                                                                                                                                                     The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, has expressed worry over what he described as the growing neglect of traditional festivals of the Yoruba by traditional rulers. He noted that rather than make conscious efforts to nurture and promote such annual traditional festivals, many traditional rulers in Yorubaland were apathetic towards such festivals on the excuse of being Christians or Muslims. Adeyemi said this during the celebration of the 18th Otan Ayegbaju Day in Otan Ayegbaju, Osun State. He said, “I have noticed that it is now becoming a norm in towns across Yorubaland for Obas to excuse themselves from the observance of yearly traditional festivals such as Irele, Egungun, Sango, Osun and so on, primarily on account of the traditional rulers being either Christians or Muslim

MTN, Globacom, Etisalat violate line porting time — NCC

The Nigerian Communications Commission has said MTN Nigeria, Globacom and Etisalat violated their Mobile Number Portability process time obligations in the third quarter of 2015. The NCC, in its ‘2015 3Q Compliance Monitoring and Enforcement Report’ published on its website on Thursday, said it had resolved to monitor operators and take appropriate actions to address the increasing cases of port request rejections. The commission said, “Consequent upon the above, series of compliance checks were carried out regarding timer violations by donor operators with respect to ‘validation and deactivation responses,’ which have timelines of two hours and an hour, respectively.” On Etisalat’s alleged timer violation, the NCC said it observed an infraction in a corporate port request of over 63 lines belonging to Neoconde Energy Limited. It said, “The company had initiated a corporate port out request from Etisalat to Airtel on 7th August, 2015 at 9.13am but was partially completed as

Police arrest 21 homosexual students in Delta

Police detectives in Asaba, Delta State, have arrested 21 students who have been allegedly involved in same sex activities. It was reliably gathered that the two state-owned polytechnics (names withheld) where the suspects were arrested, were a beehive of perverse sexual acts as male students engage in same sex activities for financial gains. Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mrs. Celestina Kalu, who confirmed the arrest of the suspects, said the police acted on a tip off. She said, “We had it on good authority that the male students allegedly engaged in anal sex. The suspects, upon interrogation, made useful statements to the police while investigations are ongoing.” Investigation revealed that homosexuality has been on the rise in the two institutions and culprits were also members of various cult groups. Meanwhile, the police in Obiaruku have arrested the leader of a notorious cult group who allegedly had been terrorising the community in the last one year.

The police in Bayelsa have arrested one Promise Meshak for the alleged murder of a stalwart of the All Progressives Congress, Mr. Andrew June. The police were also said to have invited 17 persons including a leader of the Peoples Democratic Party, Alex Ekiotenne, in connection with the death. June was stabbed to death with machetes last Wednesday while returning from Ekeremor town after attending the APC governorship campaign along with others who also suffered various degrees of injuries. Confirming the arrest on Saturday, the Police Public Relations Officer Bayelsa State Command, Mr. Asinim Butswat, said the prime suspect, Meshak, was apprehended. He said Meshak, a 23-year-old man, allegedly inflicted the deceased APC member with machete cuts which led to his eventual death. He, however, said others — either arrested or invited — were for investigation purpose, adding that the public would be kept abreast of the development. “I can tell you that the prime suspect, Prom
