Tambuwal flags off program to enrol 1.2m kids into schools

Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal  Tuesday flagged off an enrollment program which seeks to admit one million, two hundred and sixty eight thousand (1,268,000) new pupils into primary and junior secondary schools across the state. The ambitious program, flagged off at Bodinga LGA of the state, seeks to enhance access to all eligible children to universal basic education and promote retention, completion and transition of students from basic and secondary levels to tertiary institutions in the state. Speaking at the event, Tambuwal said government will strenghten the enrollment drive to ensure that it achieved its objectives. He said parents will be supported with a conditional cash transfer programmes by the government to ensure they allow their children attend classes. Nigeria has second-highest global stillbirths —Report

An international medical journal, Lancet , has rated Nigeria as having the second-highest stillbirth cases in the world. The journal made this known in a study released on Tuesday. The World Health Organisation, United Nations Children’s Fund and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine jointly sponsored the study. According to the research, the globe records more than 2.6milllion stillbirths annually, with 98 per cent of the cases said to be occurring in low and middle-income countries. The research also highlighted that it might take more than 160 years before a pregnant woman in Africa would have the same chance of having her baby born alive like her counterpart in a high-income country today. The journal noted that despite an increasing number cases of stillbirths in Nigeria, (more than 300,000 stillbirth cases recorded in 2015), it had made slow progress in stillbirth prevention. Mother, daughter go on trial in Spain for shooting of politician

A mother and her daugher went on trial in Spain on Tuesday for shooting dead a ruling party politician in broad daylight after the younger woman lost her job with a local council, in a case that shocked the country. Montserrat Gonzalez, 60, shot Isabel Carrasco, the conservative Popular Party (PP) leader of the provincial government, in the back on the afternoon of May 12, 2014 as she walked on a pedestrian footbridge in the northern city of Leon, prosecutors and witnesses say. With her face covered by a scarf and sunglasses, Gonzalez shot Carrasco two more times in the head before walking away with her daughter who was nearby, according to prosecutors. A retired police officer who happened to be on the footbridge when the killing occured trailed the pair and called police who arrested Gonzalez and her daughter, Triana Martinez. MTN Foundation sends 14 children to India for heart surgery

Under the MTN Foundation’s Medical Intervention Scheme, 14 beneficiaries out of the 20 who were diagnosed at Gold Cross Hospital, Lagos have been shortlisted for heart surgery treatment in India. They are due to leave the country today Wednesday, January 20, 2016. Two of the initial 16 beneficiaries selected for treatment dropped out and decided to pursue treatment in India by other means, leaving 14 beneficiaries in the current phase of the intervention. The beneficiaries, who are majorly children from families with little means, will be treated on all heart related illnesses. Additionally, plans have been made for each of them to travel with an adult member of their family. To ensure safety and quality of treatment, some representatives of the MTN Foundation and MTN HR Medical team travelled some weeks ago to India to inspect the hospital facilities.       The Olubadan of Ibadan land, Oba Samuel Odulana Odugade 1, has died. The respected Yoruba monarch died yesterday evening after a brief illness. He is said to have suddenly lost consciousness. He was 101 years old. May his soul rest in peace...amen. Oba Odulana ascended the throne in 2007 as the 39th Olubadan of Ibadan land. He was the 17th Olubadan since the title was elevated from Baale Ibadan to the Olubadan in 1930.

EFCC says We won’t disobey court orders

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has said that it will obey court orders in the ongoing prosecution of corrupt public office holders. The Chairman of the EFCC, Mr. Ibrahim Magu, told journalists on Tuesday in Abuja that the EFCC had no reason to disobey court orders. Magu said the campaign against corruption was not about him or the EFCC but the collective desire of Nigerians to move the country forward. He said, “We have never had any reason to disobey any court order and we will not disobey court orders. It is not about me, it is about the desire to move this country forward.” Magu spoke amidst complaints in some quarters that the commission was committing acts of rights’ violation against detained suspects. Lassa fever claims 63 lives, spread to 17 states – Minister of Health says

The Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, says the Lassa fever epidemic has claimed 63 lives out of 212 reported from 62 local government areas in affected states. Speaking ‎at the emergency National Council of Health meeting in Abuja yesterday January 19th, The Minister listed the 17 affected states as Bauchi, Niger, Taraba, Kano, Rivers, Oyo, Ondo, Edo, Plateau, Gombe, Nasarawa, Lagos, Delta, Ekiti, Ebonyi, Zamfara, Kogi as well as the FCT. He said there is high level of denial and conspiracy across some states and appealed to health managers to stop the trend of being silent and deceiving their state government. He described the denial of Ebonyi to report five suspected cases and one death as conspiracy of denial. Adewole added that intensive efforts are being made to stop the spread of the deadly virus. He announced that six of the most affected states will have Lassa fever diagnostic centres. They are Niger, Nasarawa, Taraba, Plateau, Bauchi and Ondo states. This i

The Benin Division of the Court of Appeal has upheld the judgment of an Edo State High Court which on September 26, 2012 dismissed a N20bn libel suit filed against Punch Nigeria Limited, the publisher of The Punch newspapers, by Arik Air Nigeria Limited. The appellate court, in a lead judgment by Justice Ugochukwu Ogakwu on November 25, 2015, affirmed the verdict of the lower court and dismissed Arik’s appeal “for lacking in substance or merit.” The judgment was consented to by Justices Philomena Ekpe and Hamma Barka, who in turn affirmed the N50,000 cost imposed on Arik in favour of Punch Nigeria Limited. The airline had in 2010 filed a suit numbered B/576/2010 against Punch Nigeria Limited, claiming that it was libeled through a story published in The Punch Newspapers’ edition of July 7, 2010. Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode The Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, on Tuesday said crime had reduced in the state. Ambode, who spoke during the second ‘Quarterly Town Hall Meeting’ at the City Hall, explained that statistics showed that crime rate reduced by 65 per cent during the last quarter of 2015 compared with 2014. He added that his administration would continue to stay true to its policy built on a tripod of security, infrastructure development and job creation. He said, “In the last quarter, we invested massively to re-energise and reinvigorate the state security infrastructure to bring it to a level comparable to what obtains in other modern city states. The investment in security has led to the reduction of crime rate in the last quarter of 2015. “I am happy to report that our state is a lot safer today as statistics shows that crime rate reduced by 65 per cent during the last quarter compared with Year 2014.” Ambode, who said he

N2.6bn fraud: ‘Fashion designer got N546m from NIMASA’

Patrick Akpobolokemi The trial of an ex director  General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, Patrick Akpobolokemi, and five others continued before a Federal High Court in Lagos on Tuesday with a bureau de change operator, Hussein Sabo, testifying against them. The defendants are being tried by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for allegedly converting to their personal use a total of N2,658,957, 666, belonging to NIMASA between December 23, 2013 and May 28, 2015. They were on December 4, 2015 arraigned on 22 counts in relation to the offence before Justice Ibrahim Buba. The accused — Akpobolokemi, Ezekiel Agaba, Ekene Nwakuche, Governor Juan, Blockz and Stonz Limited and Al-Kenzo Logistic Limited — however pleaded not guilty to all the charges.
