Image
Joke Jacobs and her husband, Olu, are top personalities in the theatre industry in Nigeria. In this interview, Joke says the couple made their first good money staging a play on virgin Mary’s pregnancy. You have stayed on top of your game for over four decades. Do you see yourself retiring soon? I am very lucky to belong to an industry that doesn’t recognise retirement. There are so many actors in the West who say they are retired but still find their way back into the profession. Ours is an industry that allows for longevity and I have taken advantage of it.   In hindsight, what are you most grateful for career-wise? Being able to re-invent myself in ways that make sense. I am very grateful that at every point of my career, re-invention has made sense for that particular time it occurred. This has also ensured that I remain relevant. Is there anything you wish you could have done better or differently in your career? I am very glad that I began acting at the time I did. If I

Don’t mix religion with common sense

Image
United Kingdom-based actress, Victoria Inyama, recently visited Nigeria. She talks about her family and career What have you busied yourself with in the United Kingdom? I have been very much involved in raising my family and I also went back to the university to further my education. I went back to study Psychology despite having a bachelor’s degree in Creative Arts. Why did you choose to study Psychology? I like to give back and since I have the skills, I wanted to do something that would benefit everybody. One of the things that I have noticed is that a lot of people, especially those in the ethnic minority are not well represented in the area of psychology, so  helping people assess themselves in terms of their well-being  is one of the things that I want to achieve. How did you become an actress? I started acting when I was young and it was Zik Zulu-Okafor and Alex Usifo, that made me venture into acting. He was already a part of the soap,  Ripples  and they needed

LYDIA FORSON: I’m not ashamed of my new age

Image
Curvy Ghanaian actress, Lydia Forson, recently turned 32, declaring that, against societal perception, her new age is nothing to be ashamed of. In most cases, it is believed that before 30, a lady should be settled to a married life and career. However, the actress declared that she is happy for the grace to witness the new age. “I’m 32 years old today; yes, let me spell it out for you; thirty-two. I’m not going to let anyone shame me into thinking I shouldn’t say this out loud, or believe that it’s a sign that I’m running out of time, for what I do not know. “Many instead of looking at age as a thing of pride we’ve shrouded it in negativity. I lost a friend this morning to cancer and it just dawned on me that she didn’t get to have this opportunity. “So I’m going to scream my age out loud and wear it with a badge if I have to. Why? Because 32 years is how many mornings I’ve woken up and nights I’ve gone to bed. “32 is how many years I’ve inhaled and exhaled without skipp

Kidnapping is how I provide jobs for my unemployed friends – Suspect

Image
In the last three months, Gadilo Agbajo, an Arogbo, Ondo State indigene, has been involved in three kidnaps, which netted the gang he led N14.8m in total. But when Agbajo and eight other members of the gang were brought before journalists at the Lagos State Police Command headquarters following their arrest, the explanation he gave for his life of crime surprised many. According to Agbajo, whom the gang members said was responsible for sharing the ransom money in the bush anytime the families of their victims paid, he was not a selfish criminal. Agbajo explained that he used his criminal activities to help his friends.“When some of my people who did not have job could not pay their house rents, they came to meet me for help. “I normally told them that they should not worry and that I would find a way to help them and they could help me as well. My way of helping them is getting them involved in the kidnapping business rather than for them to roam the streets without work.

51 things every woman should know

Image
Her Minimums and Maximums. Those things that she is committed to never allowing herself to accept. The point at which she will not go any lower. The level at which she will not push any further. Also, how far she is prepared to go if need be. When it’s time to say NO. Understanding when that is the only answer you can offer and accepting it’s okay to say it. When to break away and move on. This may mean severing ties with a girlfriend, lover, family member, a crippling job, and bad habits. What she weighs. Bite the bullet and get on those weighing scales. Know what you are dealing with and face up to it. What her blood pressure reads. Too many of us are walking time bombs, not having a clue of what is ticking inside of us. Go and get things checked out even if it’s only to be reassured and if not, to do something about it. When she took her last smear test. Stop postponing it and ignoring going for the test. Don’t let it cost you! Make sure she gets a mammography at the
